Winter Games Day

Busy lives means a day set aside to wargame is a rare and treasured treat.  We enjoyed a great day last week.   The three main protagonists presented a game each.  By game 3 we were up to 4 players and 2 umpires ...

GAME ONE: AMW - Alexander at the Hydaspes

Alexander attacked powerfully on the right while holding back in the centre where light troops battled against a long line of elephants.

(Alexander and Poros fight it out at the Hydaspes)

(Light troops wear down the elephant corps)

(the beasts attack)

(Poros rallies his rampaging elephants)

(but despite the damage they cause, the attack flounders)

By which stage Alexander had broken the enemy flank and began to roll up the centre.

GAME TWO: THE WAR GAME - Age of Marlborough

This splendid battle was stage with Dixon 15s and challenged us to dispute the line of a river (a Grant-Asquith scenario) ...

(a massive 'sledgehammer' of allied infantry crush the French centre)

(a French volley scythes the Allied masses ... but they kept coming ...)

(quantity exerting its fundamental quality)

(WSS: tumbling cavalry action on the right flank)

(the French left)

(another volley sees off the Irish ... too little? ... too late?)

GAME THREE: AK47 ON ICE - Ice Station Cold Feet

Finally, my game was a multiplayer semi historical shoot out on the ice flow ... drawing as much on the fictional elements of Ice Station Zebra as on the historical details of Cold Feet and covert operations on the drift ice ...

(Assault troops in Parkas cluster around the Ice Station - Khurasan figures)

(Ice Station Cold Feet)

Unlike Cold Feet, the players were encouraged to confront potential enemies and AK's 'Double Four' - airstrike came into play on a couple of spectacular occasions.

(Cold War airstrike)

(that Zebra moment ... submarine breaks through the ice to effect the extraction)

There is a fuller report on Cold Feet posted on P.B.Eye-Candy/IC-47 ...

This was a great day ... all three long-awaited games fitted in before Christmas (this year!)
