Covid-19: High Court quashes 'unlawful' vaccine mandate for police and defence force staff

25/02/2022...The High Court has quashed the Covid-19 vaccine mandate for police and Defence Force staff. The order required Defence Force personnel, and police constables, recruits and authorised officers to have two doses of the vaccine by 1 March, or face termination.

Fewer than 300 of the more than 31,000 staff affected by the mandate across the organisations remain unvaccinated. On 6 January, three unvaccinated staff sought a judicial review of the mandate.

They were supported by affidavits from 37 of their colleagues in the same situation. Justice Cooke today released his decision which upheld their claims the vaccination order breached their rights under the Bill of Rights Act. While the judge did not accept some of the applicants' arguments, he agreed the mandate infringed on section 11 and section 15 of the Act. Click here RNZ news

THIS PROTEST SHOULD HAVE ENDED WEEKS AGO Winston Peters Said

Wed 23/02/2022 5:13 PM..If the government had opened dialogue on day one – as governments have done with every other protest on the grounds of parliament, we wouldn’t be in this position to begin with.  The reason they didn’t is because, for the first time in living memory, every politician from the Prime Minister down signed a pact not to engage with a lawfully democratic protest on parliament grounds.

This protest needs to end.  The violence needs to end.  The disruption needs to end.  It should have ended weeks ago. My presence at the protest yesterday was for one reason and one reason only – to show that if any politician has the guts to go and engage they can.

It was not to endorse the protest or protesters, nor of course to signal any sort of support for the minority who continue to exhibit violent behaviour.  It is plain to see that if dialogue is not established soon things will just continue to get much worse. The protest should never have been allowed to grow to become so entrenched and able to fester to the boiling point of violence that we are now witnessing.  Tamatoa de Emperor for Student Health Articles...New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters

Woman reaches settlement with employer over period pain sick leave

26/02/2022...An allegation of gender discrimination against an employer who allegedly criticised their employee for taking one sick day due to menstruation-related illness has been settled. The Auckland woman, who worked in an office environment, complained to the Human Rights Commission, saying her manager criticised her use of sick leave.

Senior solicitor Nicole Browne, who represented the woman via the Office of Human Rights Proceedings, said the settlement proved the legitimacy of paid sick leave for illness and pain caused by menstruation.

Belittling the consequences of menstruation and the experiences of being a woman (or any other person who menstruates) erodes any progress towards an equality of opportunity for all genders," she said. This was a great outcome for our client and we commend her bravery in standing up for her rights, safety and inclusion of women in the workplace. Russian woman living in the UK fears it is the ‘end of our lives as we know them’

Danielle Desouza 26/02/2022...A Russian woman living in the UK has said “the nightmare” that is happening in Ukraine has led to “the end of our lives as we know them”. Anna, 44, a marketing manager from the south of England, told the PA news agency that she was worried about what life would hold for her and fellow Russians across the globe as Vladimir Putin’s forces moved further into Ukraine towards Kyiv.

This is the end of our lives as we know them; we are going to be pariahs from now on. We are inevitably going to tarnished with the same brush as Putin’s regime. The Russian military invaded eastern Ukraine on February 24 before capturing the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and advancing on Kyiv.

Anna, who did not want to give her surname, said: “What’s going on in Ukraine is obviously a tragedy and a nightmare. I follow plenty of Ukrainian bloggers and people who normally write about fashion and beauty are not posting. Click here Independent

Russia 'must now face consequences': Ardern

RNZ 25/02/2022...Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has added her voice to those of our international partners condemning Russia's "illegal invasion" of Ukraine, saying New Zealand has immediately taken a range of measures against the Russian government.

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine and launched a full-scale land, sea and air attack on the country overnight on Thursday local time. New Zealand has joined with the UN in launching economic sanctions against Russia.

Putin said his goal was the "demilitarisation and denazification" of Ukraine, but US President Joe Biden has asserted the evidence clearly shows Russia is the aggressor and it has no evidence for its justifications. Ardern says Russia began a "military offensive and an illegal invasion" of Ukraine yesterday, New Zealand time. Click here News-room

Australia imposes more sanctions on Russia, criticises China's response

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia imposed more sanctions on Friday against Russia targeting several of its elite citizens and lawmakers, and said it was "unacceptable" that China was easing trade restrictions with Moscow at a time when it invaded Ukraine.

"We will work along with our partners for a rolling wave of sanctions and continuing to ratchet up that pressure on Russia," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said during a media conference. Morrison said the fresh sanctions will be placed against "oligarchs whose economic weight is of strategic significance to Moscow" and over 300 members of the Russian parliament who voted to authorise sending Russian troops into Ukraine.

Australia is also working with the United States to align with their sanctions overnight on key Belarussian individuals and entities who helped Russia and NATO to provide non-lethal military equipment and medical supplies for Ukraine, he said. Click here Reuter

The EU said it would also focus on the energy sector, “a key economic area which especially benefits the Russian state”, with an export ban that “will hit the oil sector by making it impossible for Russia to upgrade its refineries. Glory back Andy Keogh to end goal drought

Justin Chadwick 26/02/2022..Perth Glory striker Bruno Fornaroli predicts the goals will soon flow for Andy Keogh as the former Ireland international battles through another drought. Keogh has remarkably scored in just one of his past 32 A-League Men games, when he notched four goals in a 5-1 drubbing of Western Sydney in May last year.

That goal blitz broke a 20-game scoring drought for Keogh in the ALM. Keogh's current ALM scoring drought stands at 11 games, seven of which have come this season. The 35-year-old had previously been a goalscoring machine for Glory, but he now plays a more selfless role

Nevertheless, his near-barren run over a 32-game stretch for Glory must be a worry and he'll be aiming to turn it around in Sunday's clash with Western United in Tasmania. Maybe the people think Andy doesn't score, but he does many things to help the team," Fornaroli said. Click here AAP

Helen Clark on Ukraine invasion: an abomination and threat to world peace

25//02/2022...The threat to global peace posed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine bears chilling similarities to Germany's actions early in WWII, former NZ prime minister Helen Clark says.

The former New Zealand prime minister and former United Nations Development Programme Administrator warned Putin has aspirations to restore Russia's power over the areas that made up the Soviet Union.

He has Belarus completely in his pocket, Ukraine is a large country on his borders which he now seeks to control, one fears for Moldova to the south of Ukraine, where the Russians did snatch a part of Moldova bordering the Black Sea at the time of the breakup of the Soviet Union, he has snatched two territories of Georgia, also on his borders..Click here RNZ news

Former PM Jim Bolger worries Russia invasion will not stop with Ukraine

26/02/2022...Former prime minister Jim Bolger is fearful Russian President Vladimir Putin will try to invade other former Soviet states after Ukraine, in an attempt to restore the Soviet Union. Bolger, who was prime minister as the Soviet Union fell in 1991, said the Russian invasion of Ukraine was a disaster, and these were "frightening days".

Bolger said Putin was likely emboldened by Russia's annexation of the Crimea Peninsula in 2014. I surmise from his perspective that didn't cost him much, so he's trying again," Bolger said. I wouldn't be at all surprised if his ambition was to try recreate the old Soviet Empire.

Of course that means a number of other much smaller republics than the Ukraine must be fearful of what Putin might decide to do on their borders. This is what makes this so dangerous. Bolger said he agreed with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern that New Zealand strongly condemn Russia's actions and align with Western allies. Click here RNZ news
