Great Moments In DC Marketing

One of the great things about reading back issues from the years I was out of comics is finding ads for comics that I never knew existed.

From the "Hey Kids, Comics" page (a sort of turn of the century version of DC Nation) in Batman: Gotham Knights #9 (2000):

Really...they just compared these books to The Sopranos. Really?

I'd never even heard of them. But surely such high praise means they were collected in trade, so I'll just pick them up and...

What? Never collected in trade? Perchance that comparison to the Sopranos was superfluous?

Surely not! Especially with this slogan:

Impressive!

I can imagine this slogan took off like gangbusters, and thousands of comic fans were walking around in 2000, trying to get their friends to read funny books by saying, "It's like the Sopranos--only on paper!" And I'm sure it worked quite well, too.

So everyone--try it today!! Try to convert a non-comic reader by showing them your favorite book, and say "It's like Mad Men--only on paper!" or "It's like Law & Order--only on paper!"

It's guaranteed to work!

Of course, given DC recent announcement, perhaps we could amend the slogan to "It's just like Chuck--only on an iPad!!"
